Anti bullying research and guide

As part of its commitment to improve clients' experiences of its hostels, St Mungo's carried out research to explore the issue of bullying in 2007.

Having identified that bullying was happening in hostels, and with the knowledge that bullying negatively affects the lives of those living and working in hostel communities, St Mungo's set about trying to systematically identify ways of decreasing bullying through the creation of an anti bullying toolkit. This toolkit focussed on three core areas identified in the original research project:

  • Building better communities
  • Staffing
  • Reporting mechanisms

The toolkit was designed to be used on a hostel-by-hostel basis, to enable each setting to develop its own anti bullying approach.

Using an innovative peer research methodology, and with the support of the London Housing Foundation, the impact of the toolkit has been evaluated in terms of client outcomes.
