St Mungo’s responds to Housing Minister Caroline Flint’s announcement on employment and social housing

06 February 2008

St Mungo's, London's largest homelessness charity, today responded to Housing Minister, Caroline Flint, as she proposed that people in social housing should be actively seeking employment as a condition of their tenancy.

Chief Executive Charles Fraser said:

"People in social housing are often among the most marginalised and excluded of our society. Nearly 97% of our clients want to work; many of them have complex needs and a lack of skills that make it impossible for them to do so. What we need from Government is sustained funding for programmes such as our recently launched Pathways to Employment project, in which men and women are supported to work towards their vocational aspirations at a pace they can realistically achieve. Imaginative solutions that are tailored to the individual are essential if we are to tackle the culture of worklessness among our most socially excluded adults. Punitive initiatives are simply not helpful."

At present our Pathways to Employment project is funded by charitable donations. To help more homeless men and women into work click here.
