St Mungo's calls on Mayor to honour homeless pledge

06 May 2008

St Mungo's, London's largest homeless charity, has today urged newly elected Mayor Boris Johnson to follow through on his pledge to end rough sleeping in London by 2012.

St Mungo's chief executive Charles Fraser said:

"We congratulate Mr Johnson on his election victory and welcome the commitment he made to eliminate rough sleeping in London.

"Homeless people are acutely affected by some of the most challenging problems facing London today: the housing shortage, health inequalities and social exclusion.

"More than 3000 people were sleeping rough in the capital last year and breaking this cycle will require co-ordinated and targeted action on housing, healthcare and work.

"St Mungo's is committed to working with the Mayor on each of these elements to ensure he achieves his target and delivers lasting change for London."
