St Mungo's residents advise on Government strategy
09 May 2008
Residents of St Mungo's hostels have given the Government direct advice on its proposed new strategy to reduce rough sleeping.
Three members of Outside In, St Mungo's resident group, met with Communities and Local Government officials in Covent Garden on Thursday 8 May to provide feedback on their recently released discussion paper: Rough Sleeping 10 Years On.
Consultation on this discussion paper will feed into a new three-year strategy to reduce the number of rough sleepers and improve their employment, skills and health outcomes.
Edwin Hilliard, a member of Outside In, welcomed the opportunity to put forward his views:
"It's important that the Government listens to former rough sleepers and gets its information straight from the horse's mouth.
"The meeting was very productive and we felt the officials listened carefully to the ideas we put forward to keep people from returning to the streets.
"We know from first-hand experience what works and what doesn't."
Mr Hilliard said he looked forward to further opportunities to contribute to the strategy.
