Budget reaction 2009 - Don't leave homeless people behind
22 April 2009
Commenting on today's Budget, Mike McCall, St Mungo's Executive Director of Operations, said:
"This boost for jobs and training must not be a hollow announcement. While we welcome extra resources to help the long term jobless back into work, our concern is that those who need re-training and more support may be left even further behind.
"Many homeless people will face the threat of penalties within the new welfare to work regime and we need to ensure they can compete on an equal footing with "job ready" younger clients and those made recently redundant. The jury is still out on employer subsidies as a way of helping the long term unemployed back into stable work and we are still looking for dedicated programmes which will improve the employability of those furthest from the labour market."
