Our Skills & Employment Services

A poor education is often a contributing factor to homelessness, while unmet physical and mental health needs can seriously compromise a person's employability.

Despite the challenges homeless people face, such as poor health or educational needs, 65% of our clients have a desire to work, either now or in the future. To help them towards this goal, we offer a large range of activities as well as 11 different skills and employment programmes.

Last year we completed an evaluation of some of our most innovative projects, offering homeless people training in painting and decorating, construction, and music production. Out of 117 clients taking part in programmes over the last three years, 62 achieved an OCN qualification and a further 21 have gone on to paid employment; providing the difference that the right kind of motivation and intensive support can make.

During Autumn 2012 we will be piloting a St Mungo's Recovery College, with courses co-designed by clients and staff.

We also provide one of the largest programmes of occupation and learning opportunities for homeless people, including:

One client recently found work with a major food company with the help of the Employment team. She said:

"[They] advised me to apply for a full-time position with the company. Within a week I was asked to come for an interview where I successfully secured a job. I am totally over the moon and have been on cloud nine since getting back into work."
