Happiness Matters to our clients

Despite the many improvements to mental health services in the past decades, St Mungo's believes that still, even now, homeless people with mental health problems do not get the services they need. That is why, to mark our 40th anniversary, we are focusing on mental health in our Action Week 2009. We went to our clients to ask them how they feel about their mental health and wellbeing, what they think about the services available to them, and what they think would help.

Peer researchWe asked a group of people with their own histories of homelessness - all current St Mungo's service users - to help us decide what questions to ask. We gave them training in interview skills so they could go out and talk to other homeless people to gather information for the survey. Over 100 face-to-face interviews were undertaken with four groups of homeless people at different stages of recovery and with a range of diagnoses, known and unknown.

The resulting report, 'Happiness Matters', looks at subjects including access and barriers to services and support for mental health, the impact of drink and drugs, and emotional wellbeing.
