Mary’s story

Our history began back in 1969 when a group of volunteers decided to do something to help the people they saw sleeping rough on the streets of London. Mary was one of those early volunteers and used to drive up ‘in her little mini’ to offer soup and sandwiches to people who were homeless.

Now, 50 years on, she lives in Bath and is still volunteering. Mary is heavily involved with KS2Bath – a support group for carers of people with mental health difficulties – that works with with New Hope, a St Mungo’s funded project that aims to empower people living with mental health issues.

Listen as Mary reflects on her experiences of volunteering, her impressions of homelessness then, and now, and her hopes for the future.

Our 50 year history is filled with some extraordinary people. To mark our anniversary, we will be profiling 50 Lives throughout 2019 – a snapshot of those who have played their part in our story. You can read the stories on our website at
