Peter’s Outreach story

Our Skills and Employment team works with people to help them prepare for work.

Image: outreachPeter* is an Outreach Worker for St Mungo’s Oxford outreach team. But only four years ago, he was sleeping rough after his cocaine use spiralled out of control. “I’d been taking cocaine for years, but I’d always worked hard and managed to hold down a full time job at the same time. Slowly, it started to take over. As my personal life declined, my drug taking increased.

And then, suddenly, my entire life came crashing down around me.

I lost everything. I got evicted from my house and lost my job. I was out on the streets, alone, with no one to turn to, and nothing but a sleeping bag.

After a few months on the streets, a community policeman came up to me and told me about a St Mungo’s service nearby. Within a few months St Mungo’s got me into a Salvation Army hostel where I stayed for a year, and got help with my addiction.

With the help of St Mungo’s, and supporters like you, I’ve been able to completely turn my life around. Thank you so much.

After that I started volunteering with St Mungo’s. I was paired with an amazing Outreach Worker, who taught me so much and gave me so much encouragement.

After volunteering, I went on to do a St Mungo’s apprenticeship, and got a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care. That led to me getting this job with the Oxford outreach team.

In four years, St Mungo’s got me from drug addiction and sleeping on the streets, to getting a full time job that I absolutely love.

I specialise in working with clients who have been sleeping rough for a long time. There’s a lot of mistrust. It’s my job to build that trust back up.

“With the help of St Mungo’s, and supporters like you, I’ve been able to completely turn my life around. Thank you so much.”
