It’s fantastic that you’d like to find out more about volunteering at St Mungo’s. Palliative care for people experiencing homelessness is a developing field of understanding. Currently there are limited services that are able to support our clients, and the complex needs they have, in receiving palliative care. Sadly many are unlikely to gain access to palliative care until very late in their illness, if at all, and their choices for care are limited.
The role of a Palliative Care and Bereavement Befriender is to work with individuals at risk of dying or needing bereavement support. They will offer emotional listening support, a calm presence, and above all a non-judgemental approach that cultivates nurturing and respect. Volunteers will work across different projects including hostels, care homes and hospices to meet individuals where they are based and work one to one.
