St Mungo’s welcomes Communities and Local Government discussion paper on rough sleeping

08 April 2008

Today the CLG launched a discussion paper set to inform their upcoming strategy on further reducing the number of people who sleep rough across the country.

As half of the UK's rough sleepers bed down in London, St Mungo's (as the capital's largest homelessness charity) was in a unique position to provide consultation on the paper.

Charles Fraser, St Mungo's Chief Executive, says:

"These discussions are going in the right direction. We welcome the fact that the government is renewing its commitment to eliminating rough sleeping, and is talking to us and other frontline agencies.

"Of course, the reasons why people become homeless are different from why they remain homeless - they must receive targeted help to tackle their ill-health, and boost their employability if they are to get out of homelessness.

" We want to see a pan-government commitment, so that CLG's lead is backed in both word and deed by the DoH, DWP and DIUS."
