Construction Skills

We offer accredited multi‑skills training workshops in three locations:

  • Endsleigh Gardens, Camden
  • Mare Street, Hackney
  • Stokes Croft, Bristol (our newest hub)

You will train for 6–12 weeks, depending on your needs, pace, and confidence. Training is tailored to suit your learning style and abilities.

You’ll gain hands‑on experience in key maintenance and construction skills, including:

  • Painting and decorating
  • Basic carpentry
  • Plumbing
  • Tiling
  • A new introductory electrical module

Workshops run Monday to Thursday, 10am–3pm.

While you’re on the programme, you’ll get one‑to‑one support from our progression coach and employment specialist. They’ll help you plan your next steps, whether that’s:

  • Moving into further training or qualifications
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Wellbeing support
  • Paid work or apprenticeships

Practical support includes:

  • Writing or updating your CV
  • Help applying for jobs
  • Setting up email accounts
  • Understanding benefits when returning to work
  • Communicating with employers
  • Preparing for interviews

Everything is tailored to your personal goals.

Once you complete the multi‑skills workshop, you’ll have the chance to take part in work experience with one of our construction partners.

This gives you real on‑site experience that can’t be replicated in a training centre and helps you build confidence in a working environment. There may also be the opportunity to move into paid work after your placement, so it’s a great chance to show what you can do.

As a client on our programme, you’ll receive:

  • Free lunch
  • Travel fares
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You’ll also benefit from:

  • A safe, inclusive learning environment
  • Time away from the hostel setting
  • Being part of a supportive community
  • Improved social skills and confidence
  • Reduced isolation and stronger relationships

Many clients report improved physical and mental wellbeing, with an average 85% increase in wellbeing. For some, the structure and support also helps reduce substance use.

Usually support workers will refer you to our construction skills program so please do ask them about it alternatively please email us and the team will help support that process.

Putting Down Roots

Putting down roots is available to St Mungo’s clients that are interested in engaging in a regular outdoor group activity that improves their wellbeing, promotes social inclusion and gives them the opportunity to develop/learn new skills.

Our small team of friendly Gardener Trainers work alongside people in the gardens, teaching you the practical horticultural skills needed to grow and maintain a wide selection of plants, including flowers, fruit and vegetables.

You do not need to have any previous gardening experience and many attend PDR simply for the wellbeing benefits associated with gardening

In addition to our regular garden sites (in London and Bristol), we also offer a programme of “Inreach” work, where PDR Gardener Trainers can come to hostels to work with groups of clients on small gardening projects. Check with your support worker to see if this is offered where you are.

In London we currently run regular sessions at:

  • 117 Cedars Rd, Clapham (on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10am – 2pm)

We also run regular Inreach sessions at hostel gardens in Lewisham, Hammersmith & Fulham, Camden and Islington

In Bristol we run regular sessions at 2 sites in the city centre:

  • Castle Park Physic Garden (Wednesdays, 10am – 2pm)
  • Our allotment site in Wade Street (Tuesdays, 10am – 2pm)

We also run regular Inreach sessions at our Services in Bristol, speak to your keyworker so find out more

You can be referred by your support worker and if accepted you will then be invited to visit a garden and take part in a Taster Day.

If you attend regularly for a few weeks and you enjoy it/want to continue with PDR, you will then be formally inducted.

You can attend sessions up to two times per week (depending on the spaces available and accessibility of each site). Lunch is provided free of charge.

All tools are provided, and if you attend regularly with PDR you will be given a new pair of steel toe cap boots and a PDR sweatshirt and t-shirts.

Employment Support

We support clients who have expressed an interest in gaining employment.  Our approach is based on a model of intervention called IPS (Individual Placement Support) which is an evidence-based approach that aims to help people find and retain employment.

If you are referred to us, you will be supported by a highly trained Employment Specialist who provides 1:1 employment advice and coaching to help identify your experiences, strengths and capabilities.  We then fully support you to look for and apply for work, including advice and guidance on how work affects your benefits.

Once at work, we will continue to support you for up to 3 months to help you settle into the job.

In Oxford and Reading we work in our Outreach and Housing First

In Brighton we work with Gloucester Street and Housing First

In London we work in Lambeth, Lewisham & Southwark, Ealing, Westminster

We also work across Bristol

If you are a client outside of those areas, then speak to your support worker about provision available where you are

If you are interested in looking for work and live in one of the areas mentionedask your support worker to contact the Employment Specialist attached to your service, and they will provide you with all the help you need to make referral for you
