We’re still smiling when we think about this year’s Big Weekend 2026 (the new, co-produced name of our annual client weekend away). Clients, volunteers and staff from St Mungo’s headed to the beautiful Minstead Study Centre in the heart of the New Forest National Park for a few days packed with fresh air, laughter, adventure and plenty of memorable moments.
The trip got off to a great start as everyone met at the station and travelled down together. Before long, people were settling into their surroundings, exploring the woodland site, meeting the sheep and finding their way around their home for the weekend. Whether sleeping in dormitories or camping under the stars, there was a real sense of excitement about what lay ahead.
Saturday offered something for everyone. Some people took on short, medium or long coastal walks, while others chose a birdwatching trip around the wetlands near Lymington. There were beautiful views, plenty of photo opportunities and a chance to enjoy being outdoors at a pace that suited everyone. Back at the centre, people got involved in arts and crafts, relaxed in the grounds and enjoyed spending time together.
The evenings were just as memorable. Campfires, music, quizzes, card games and lots of conversation helped turn strangers into friends. There was singing, laughter and a real sense of community as everyone came together to share stories and enjoy each other’s company.
On Sunday morning, the group gathered for one final breakfast before celebrating the weekend with certificates and medals. For some, the achievement was completing one of the longer walks. For others, it was trying something new, making friends, spending time away or simply taking part in the weekend. Every achievement was celebrated.
What stood out most was the impact the weekend had on the people who attended. Away from everyday pressures, people had the chance to build confidence, connect with others and create lasting memories.
“Thank you for putting us on the Big Weekend, you were not wrong, best experience of my life! What a magical experience. Never have I felt so safe, seen and heard.”
“The last time I used this tent, I was on the street, the difference between then and now is night and day.”
“This is the first time I have managed something like this weekend sober. I have been drinking since I was 13 and I now see a way forward.”
Looking back, the weekend was about much more than walks, campfires and time away. It was about people coming together, supporting one another and creating experiences that build confidence and connection. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the weekend such a success. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
