Lived Experience Trustee

At St Mungo’s we keep clients at the heart of what we do.

For clients this means:

  • Involvement in their own support
  • Involvement in the service they live or are a part of
  • Involvement in wider St Mungo’s operations
  • Involvement in the community they are a part of

We think it’s really important that the views of people with lived experience of homelessness feeds into our decision-making, right up to our Board of trustees which oversees the safe and legal running of St Mungo’s.

That’s why we have a Client Advisory Board, made up of current and former clients, that helps connect trustees with client views and experiences.

Lived Experience Trustee

A vital role which further embeds the voice of the people we support is a trustee with lived experience. Someone who sits on the Board and contributes to decision making, using their lived experience of homelessness.

So, what is a trustee with lived experience?

It simply means an individual who has had current or recent experience of using St Mungo’s services or similar services somewhere else. This could mean you have experience of sleeping rough or of spending time in a hostel

We want that individual to champion the client’s voice and ensure that our Board of trustees always take the client’s perspective into consideration when making decisions.

Do I need to understand how Boards work or have that type of experience?

Absolutely not – we provide support, mentoring and training to help you navigate what’s needed to join a Board.
