Yassin’s Story

Yassin is a client in one of our accommodation services, having lost his home during Covid. He also takes part in our creative writing sessions. Here he tells us his story and what he hopes the future will hold.

Things began to change

I met the St Mungo’s team around 10 years ago – I’d been homeless for a few months and was sleeping on the streets. Visiting their Broadway Centre in West London – a drop-in clinic for people who are homeless, was when St Mungo’s began to change things for me.

They helped me get my own place, but due to different reasons, things went wrong during Covid. I was evicted from my home and then came to where I am now, where I’ve been living for nearly a year.

Looking to the future

Things are going well for me and I’m looking ahead to the future. I’m in drug recovery, and currently being supported in taking methadone. My carer, Adeyinka always encourages me. He joins me at my medical appointments and is there to chat to about anything on my mind.

I didn’t want this help at first, but I’m glad I decided to say yes. The room I have includes my own bathroom and kitchen area, and the team supports me in becoming independent again.

Being here and taking part in the creative writing sessions are an enjoyable part of my day. I’ve been coming along since they started and still look forward to them. I can put my thoughts onto paper and have some good chats with other people who come along.

After Christmas, I’ll hopefully have my own home again. But it’s nice to feel close to the people who work here. It’s things like coming in to check on us in the morning to see if we are alright. Plus, there’s always someone around happy to stop and have a conversation together.
