Alabama3 frontman Larry Love visits clients at Endell Street recording studio

24 January 2012

Larry LoveRob Spragg (AKA Larry Love from Alabama3) took time out last week (Friday 20 January) to meet with homeless men and women at St Mungo's Endell Street hostel's recording studio.

Spragg was interviewed for the studio's client-led podcast, Locked On Radio, before sitting down with the radio group members and some hostel residents for a chat.

He said: "Having experienced homelessness myself, and the attendant problems associated with having no shelter, I was really looking forward to seeing how St Mungo's is dealing with this situation and all I can say is Wicked! There was tremendous enthusiasm in the studio from all those involved and hopefully Alabama3 rose to the occasion. Brilliant. P.S Can I move in please?"

One of the podcast interviewers, Robert Pollack, said: "I have been really looking forward to interviewing Larry Love. I am a pretty big fan of The Alabama 3. I feel being the music interviewer for Locked On Radio has been positive for me in lots of ways personally and, I am starting to feel, professionally. It is a project I can be really excited about and very different to the help I was offered when I lived in a hostel.  It makes me sit up and take responsibility for helping myself."

The recording studio at Endell Street helps support clients with opportunities to write, record and produce music, learning sound production skills or working towards recording an album.

Alpheous Little, St Mungo's Skills and Enterprise Training Manager, said: "The recording studio is helping many of our clients to gain valuable on the job training, work experience and new skills - and, most importantly, is helping them grow in confidence and self esteem.

"The studio is one of 13 vocational schemes we run. Other projects include Putting Down Roots gardening training, Bricks and Mortar bricklaying and plastering, experience in a wood workshop and a painting and decorating social enterprise called ReVive. These run alongside literacy, numeracy and educational courses run with a range of local colleges and FE organisations."

Leading homeless charity St Mungo's works to support homeless people with housing, health and work opportunities. Last year, the charity's skills and employment team helped over 2,000 people into further education, training schemes, employment and volunteering.

DSC 9072Locked on Radio is a collaboration with Camden Calling and Endell Street Studio to produce a series of 12 monthly podcasts, researched, written and presented by people who have experienced homelessness.
