Gus Unger-Hamilton is a founding member of the award-winning band alt-J, in which he plays keyboards, bass guitar and sings. alt-J, the English indie rock band formed in 2008, has achieved significant critical and commercial success, notably winning the 2012 British Mercury Prize for their debut album An Awesome Wave, which also earned BBC Radio 6 Music Album of the Year and the 2013 Ivor Novello Award for Album of the Year. Their debut produced several hit tracks, including “Breezeblocks,” which ranked third in the 2012 Australian Triple J Hottest 100. Their sophomore album, This Is All Yours (2014), debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, as well as a nomination for IMPALA’s European Independent Album of the Year. alt-J’s third album Relaxer (2017) was also Mercury Prize-nominated, underscoring their continued critical acclaim. Throughout their career, they have been recognized with multiple Brit Award nominations and have had their music widely featured in film, television, and video games.
Gus has been a dedicated supporter of St Mungo’s for several years, contributing in numerous meaningful ways. He has generously donated high-value experiences and items to our online auctions and has helped raise funds by holding collections at alt-J gigs. Beyond fundraising, Gus has also visited several of our projects and volunteers his time whenever possible — including getting hands-on with gardening at our Putting Down Roots project in London. We’re delighted to have Gus as a St Mungo’s High-Profile Ambassador and look forward to continuing our work together through his honorary role.
